Nothingness

If you give people nothingness, they can ponder what can be achieved from that nothingness.
Tadao Ando

Tadao Ando is a Japanese architect whose approach to architecture was once categorized as critical regionalism. Ando has led a storied life, working as a truck driver and boxer prior to settling on the profession of architecture, despite never having taken formal training in the field.
We seem to be living in a time where we are terribly concerned with constantly changing. We often do not know from what to what, but we desire change nonetheless. We often feel frustrated and disappointed with what we don’t seem to be able to achieve. Why is that? I would think it is due to the fact that we are attempting to change something from something rather than creating something from nothing.
The beauty of Ando’s quote is that he lives what he says. Here is a man who has never had a moment of formal architectural training yet he is renowned for his work. He is that rare person who has vision of something that does not exist and then creates it from nothing.
So too with God. There is a famous quote in the Kabbalah about how God creates “something from nothing.” This means that at every moment in and of time God is creating you, me and all we can see from nothing at that very moment. Ando and the Rabbi’s of the Kabbalah think alike; how wonderful is that? I find it intensely powerful and inspiring as it speaks to the very core of each of us.
We seem to think we are responsible for all that we are and have. I think that without God doing what God does moment by moment, we and everything we know would cease to exist. What is nothingness? Is it really void of any substance? To the contrary, it is filled with endless possibilities, just as you and I are. Just as God is continually creating us anew, we too can recreate ourselves from nothingness as we see new horizons, vistas and possibilities.
What is it that you would like to create? Whatever it is, you have the power that God has put inside you to create something from the nothingness you currently feel. Your attitude and faith will get you started and keep you going until you have created whatever it is that you are seeking. Only you can stop you; nothing else.
My prayer for you today is that you take your nothingness, fill it with your endless dreams, visions and possibilities and together with your God, create it, embrace it and love it, for it is you.
