Seeming to Be

Each of us will one day be judged by our standard of life — not by our standard of living; by our measure of giving — not by our measure of wealth; by our simple goodness — not by our seeming greatness.

It is remarkable how many people are caught in the “appearance web.” The need to appear to be has become greater than the need to just “be”, for some. Many of us will even give up our own happiness (or our chance at it) in order to keep “looking good” in the eyes of others. I did that for a long time until I awoke to the notion that my life belonged to me and that I could create my world as I chose, knowing that God (whatever that means) was leading me in whatever direction I was heading. What personal power that gave me and allowed me to feel my full value inside my soul.

I became aware that my life was not infinite, but rather, most finite and that the choices I made each day were critical as once the time passed, it was never going to return. During this time of our life we could be having the time of our lives, but some seem to be waiting. For what, we do not know, but we hope for things that are grand rather than enjoying the gifts that we are blessed with. Something, anything, other than what is going on right now.
In my life as a Rabbi, Sober Coach and Spiritual Counselor, I am able to share my experience with congregants and clients and help them heal their trauma so they too can enjoy “being” rather than “seeming to be.”
My prayer today is that we look in the mirror, make eye contact and say I love you to ourselves and feel the richness of our souls and the majesty of our blessings; a healthy child, loving partner, roof over our heads, clothing on our backs, food in the fridge, friends to laugh with and most importantly, that we choose to live each day as we do without seeking another’s approval.
I am a modern and independent South Florida Sober Rabbi with an MSW Degree and 23+ years of sobriety providing Sober Coaching and Addiction/Spiritual Counseling focusing on energizing, affirming, motivating, healing, spiritual guidance and personalized life cycle event.
