What lies behind us and what lies ahead of us are tiny matters compared to what lives within us. Oliver Wendell Holmes

Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr., was an American jurist who served as an associate justice on the Supreme Court of the United States from 1902 to 1932. Noted for his long service, his concise and pithy opinions, and his deference to the decisions of elected legislatures, he is one of the most widely cited United States Supreme Court justices in history, particularly for his “clear and present danger” majority opinion in the 1919 case of Schenck v. United States, and is one of the most influential American common-law judges.

I spent decades living in every time period accept the time I was in. I was forever lamenting the past and projecting the future. My present was so filled with pain, shame, regret, anger and blame, that spending anytime there was impossible for me. That was the price of my addictions.
My recovery has slowly brought me into the now where I can see the myriad blessings in my life, walk through my fears with faith and your help and experience and know that regardless of what is happening at this moment, I will be okay and to persevere.
As a Rabbi and Addiction Counselor, much of my time is pent helping people see where they are in the moment they are there rather than focusing on where they have been and where they would like to be. I have learned and help others learn that when I know where I am I can choose what to next next. When I am looking back or projecting I am lost.
We spend so much time looking at our past and projecting and hoping for our future that we frequently miss where we are and what choice we have today. I understand the need to learn from our past and plan for our future, but I also understand that what lives within me today is the most important material for me to tend to. When I neglect me today, my past will not help and my future is in jeopardy.

My prayer for you today is that you find you in the moment and nurture you in that place, for when you do the past and future will become clearer and all will be well.
