Repairing Your Body

When we learn to eat properly we begin to rebuild our bodies and to fulfill our purpose on this planet to grow in health, creativity, wisdom, and compassion. Dr. Ann Wigmore

From the time I was born until clean and sober, I abused my body with alcohol, drugs, food, tobacco, caffeine and anything else I could find to numb me from myself. Once sober I continued abusing with tobacco, caffeine and food.

At eight years sober I got clean from tobacco and have not smoked since then. At 17 years I finally surrendered to food and caffeine. I do not share this to seek praise, but rather to share the spiritual path of forgiveness, willingness, use of the 12 steps, the power of choices and the benefits of action.

My addictions were always my way of expressing my hatred for myself. It did not matter what the whole world thought of me. It mattered what I thought of me and I did not think much of me.

With patience and love from the fellowship and my Higher Power, I began the slow journey of personal forgiveness and let go of the pain of shame. I began to watch others heal their bodies through healthy eating, exercise, prayer and choice. I listened to their stories and began to feel hope for myself.

It took quite a while for me to be ready, but I became ready when my health was failing and I weighed 350 pounds. I had sleep apnea, neuropathy in my feet, high blood pressure and large doses of self pity and self loathing. Like alcohol, drugs and tobacco, I have been blessed with the willingness to go to any length and once I chose to change, all the tools that had worked before still worked and today I weigh 155, run 5 miles daily, am as fit as a fiddle and was told yesterday that as I approach 64 in one week, my PSA is 0.8 – Yahoo!

So my friends, wherever you are in your journey, know that you can start as I di with baby steps and that those tiny efforts grow into something you never knew they could.

My prayer for you today is that you know your time will come to heal your body through forgiveness, faith, prayer, fellowship and action.
