Surgery can be a stressful and anxiety producing event for many reasons: Fear of the unknown, fear of pain, unfamiliar environment, fear of the outcome, Trust, Lack of information/education about the pre-post surgical intervention and listening to what others say, and based your anticipated experience on those conversations.
I had elective abdominal surgery in 2010. I was told that my surgery would be done as an out-patient procedure and when queried, my doctor told me that I would be in at 5AM and home by 2PM, in bed for a couple of days and back in the gym exercising within two weeks. Not bad I thought. It did not quite work out that way.
Murphy, our good friend when things are to go wrong, decided to visit me the day of my surgery. Suffice it to say that whatever could go wrong did, and instead of being out by 2PM, I stayed overnight and had a much unprepared for outcome. Instead of being down for a couple of days and back in the gym in two weeks, I was down three weeks later and was not back in the gym for three months. That is a lifetime as I am accustomed to training two hours daily and now I can walk 20 minutes daily.
The things we cannot account for can throw us for a loop when we have no faith and a woe is me attitude. I am blessed in that as a Rabbi, Spiritual Counselor and Sober Coach, I have a great deal of faith and know the difference in my life between a problem and an inconvenience. I don’t have a problem. I am not ill. I had surgery that had some complications and I am now inconvenienced.
My healing is divine as it is not only my body that is healing; but my mind; soul and spirit have been soothed, healed and encouraged by friends, family and congregants. I am truly blessed to have all of these people care about me and take the time to share their love with me. That gives me the strength to accept “stop” as a place I need to be until further notice.
My prayer for you today is that whatever you are facing or healing from, that you know that God loves you, I love you and you will be okay when your mind, body, soul and faith are aligned.
