That some people achieve great success is proof to all that others can achieve it as well. Abraham Lincoln
I love that Lincoln did not limit his statement to “success”, but rather “great success.” What that means for each of us is different, but he chose to see within himself the capacity to achieve “greatness”; however he defined it for himself.
Within each of us lies the opportunity to define “greatness” as we wish to achieve it. Early in my life my greatness was defined solely by power, prestige and money. That did not work for me as there was never enough of any of the three to fill my soul with contentment and peace. For some it works and I am happy for them.
Through life changing events, my life went from daily bouts of drunkenness to Rabbinic Ordination, Sober Coaching and Spiritual Counseling. I have chosen to define my greatness in terms of my kindness to others, willingness, patience, love, acceptance, faith and hope for I know that when I fulfill these parts of me, I am being elevated to a place of spiritual vitality and elevating the people I touch to a new place of hope.
How I define great success is up to me and how you define it is up to you. The vital part of the equation for each of us is to know that God has put greatness in each of us and we do not need to compare ours to another’s.
My prayer for you today is that you seek your greatness and pursue it with your faith and hope, share it with others and thank God for your faith to find it.
