“To say that obesity is caused by merely consuming too many calories is like saying that the only cause of the American Revolution was the Boston Tea Party.” – Adelle Davis
Daisie Adelle Davis, popularly known as Adelle Davis, was an American author and a pioneer in the fledgling field of nutrition during the mid-20th century. She advocated whole unprocessed foods, criticized food additives, and claimed that dietary supplements and other nutrients play a dominant role in maintaining health, preventing disease, and restoring health after the onset of disease.
I dare to write about this most painful topic as I lived most of my life as a morbidly obese person. Not just obese; morbidly obese. Morbidly is defined as pathological. That is very powerful. For those of you out there that either struggle or know others who do, I want you to know that I truly understand your pain.
There is nothing funny about obesity yet many of us laugh uncontrollably at obese humor; we point out very large people and lament them; if they are family or friends we may even ask them if they have had enough to eat or if they would like another piece. Where does our cruelty come from? It has been my experience that most people don’t know what to say or do and instead of saying or doing nothing, they tease or taunt in ways they describe as “loving.”
In my case, I made fun of myself to relax you and make it okay for you to tease me. Oh, just to set the record straight, at my peak I weighed 347 pounds; I now way 150 pounds. How did I get that way? As Adelle Davis says in her quote, there are myriad reasons that don’t bear discussion in this message, but suffice it to say, it wasn’t just food. My pain was significant both internally and externally. Until I was ready to confront it, there was nothing I could do. Once I was ready you couldn’t stop me!
If you are out there and suffering or know someone who is, please be in touch as I truly do understand how you feel and would like to hear from you. There are solutions and methods to help if you are ready to hear them. Regardless, please know that your value and beauty has nothing to do with the scale. Your heart, soul and kindness are your measure, not your waist.
