Food Addiction

Congratulations! I laud your courage for even being here and clicking to get to this page. I know from my own experience that when I reached 350 pounds, it was time to ask myself the question. Now, you do not have to be obese as I was to ask the question. I share that with you so that you know that I do understand where you are and how you feel.

Am I a food addict? This is a very important question to be asking yourself if you find that you are not able to control how, why, when, how much and how often you eat.

But first, why is it important to know if you are a food addict? It is important because food, no differently than any other substance, can be used to numb us from feelings we don’t like, behaviors that embarrass us, situations we want to avoid, etc. The long-term effects of food addiction can cause extremely dangerous health risks and side-effects. These can lead to physical problems and diseases such as:

  • diabetes
  • sleep apnea
  • hypertension
  • cardiovascular disease
  • osteoporosis
  • high blood pressure
  • stress and anxiety

I know that when I arrived at the time to ask myself the question, I suffered from five of the ailments on the list. Today I suffer from none! You can too!

I suggest that you consider the following six ideas as a way of getting started on your healing journey to wellness and happiness within.

1. Be honest with yourself about you. With honesty comes positive change. All the excuses, lies, rationalizations, justifications and denial might work in the moment, but they don’t work long term. We both know that.

2. Become aware of your thoughts about food. You have the power to choose what to eat. The food wants you to believe that you don’t, but I can assure you that you do.

3. Take a vow to yourself that you are capable of being loyal to you, loving you enough to choose differently, seek help and know to never lose hope.

4. Don’t think about eating well, eat well. Take it out of your head and transform it to your behavior and what food you actually eat. Eating well in your head is another rationalization and form of denial. The only was I eat well is by buying healthy, nutritious and tasty food.

5. Do not do this alone. None of us can. Seek professional help by calling me today, ask family or friends, find a support group, but come out of hiding and get the help you deserve.

6. Practice the use of affirmations daily as many times as you need to. If I am not going to affirm me and that I can do this, who will? Nobody is the only answer. The ten most powerful words are:

Kudos to you if you are still here! Now it is time to get to the task at hand. Please find yourself some paper and a pencil and to the best and most honest of your ability, answer the following questions:

  1. When I diet, do I keep with it or lose it fairly quickly?
  2. When I lose weight, do I gain back more than I lost?
  3. Do I constantly measure the calories I eat to the calories I burn?
  4. Are food and my weight forever on my mind?
  5. Am I squeezing into my clothes or buying new clothes with greater frequency? Do I blame the clothes for shrinking?
  6. Am I suffering medical/physical consequences from the way I am eating or not eating?
  7. Do I eat a lot in a brief period of time?
  8. Do “special” foods trigger binges for me? What are they?
  9. Do I eat differently when I am home alone than with friends?
  10. Do I weigh myself everyday and measure my self esteem by the results?
  11. Do I suffer from emotional highs and lows from my eating habits?
  12. Am I capable of having just one or two sweets?
  13. Have I been to therapy, but not worked on my eating habits?

If you determine that you may just have a problem more severe than you imagined or just as you thought you did, there is a solution. The term “food addict” can mean anything from eating a lot of packaged snacks – as in “junk food junkie,”- to having a really serious disease like alcoholism or addiction to other drugs. However, unlike for those with alcohol and other addictive drugs, there are very few places that can help you get through a one-week chemical detoxification and even fewer places to receive treatment in the way you can for other chemical dependencies. Health insurance usually does not cover the programs that do exist unless you enter via some other diagnosis.
